Hmm, well this article was obviously written before Rise Of TMNT. Sorry, but I don’t believe April O’Neil was ever whitewashed because was imply that Eastman/Laird intended April to be a POC from the beginning, when the reality is they never fully decided or seem to care that much. As for April being white once TMNT became mainstreamed that probably had to with fact that April had Irish sounded last name and thought it would make sense to make a redheaded white woman.
Anyway, I don’t see why April’s ethnicity matters, she’s black now but future iteration may make her biracial or maybe some other ethnicity. Look, I’m all for representation but I think some people put way too much attention to it. As the world becomes more ethnically diverse it should be clear by now that everything we know about race is built on a lie. Someone can look “white” and actually be non-white, someone can look black and actually be “white”. I think there will become a point where racial categories will cease to exist or it need to evolve to reflect a changing world.
